Some great reminders here, Dennis, thanks! So simple, so true, but often the simple things don't get said. Sounds like you're off to a flying start. I'm looking forward to reading about your adventures.

@Tara, I love it. So much of a culture shift is in the mindset that students, teachers, and administrators bring to their tasks. Students need to also realize that we are present FOR them. Teachers need to model this. When they do, they are the ones students remember for life.

@Peach, thanks for checking it out. H1N1 does amazing things for creating some time. Want to write a lot more about this beginning of my career. The obstacles, the thoughts, the successes and the bumps. Hopefully it'll spark conversation and if it doesn't, I'll still gain from the reflection.

Dennis, I love this very noble task. Just love it. Made me think of friends working at a school in HK who surprised me with their view of teacher lunch and break duty. It's not being on the lookout for bad behavior or something to go wrong--on the contrary--teachers feel that they are present FOR the students. If they need something, teachers are around to help. Simple yet definitely creating a culture of togetherness and trust.

p.s. Great song!

before i only though of those strikethroughs as cute. it makes the article more humanly since it shows the trail of though. but with your post, i realize why i really like it. it really conveys a lot of thought. it makes people reflect more and think about the differences a work/words make.

Hi Tracy!
Glad you found me. It's always hard to advertise a move to a new location. You just hope you catch people when they are reading their RSS feeds.

Best intentions have me returning to regular/semi-regular blogging again. Need to get back into it. Lots of stuff running through my head to get down in posts. Needs to be done.

Hope you are having a good summer!

Me too, I say yes. The statement is infinitely more powerful with the strikethrough.

(ps - hi Dennis! Finally managed to find your new blog. Going through my blogroll links this morning and had to delete quite a few for no longer being online - I'm glad your old blog was still there with the link to this one!)

When you hear genius talk, it truly is mind-blowing. Do you use Wolfram Alpha at all with your students?

I really think it fundamentally changes how we can approach math learning in the classroom, when kids can do ANY problem that way... We need to give them those opportunities to check their work and instead put them in problem solving and application situations more and more.
